 Revelations
« Thread Started on Jan 14, 2009, 2:50pm »

She didn’t know how it had happened. Yes, she was hardly the most dedicated of guardians and yes, she had only met the man responsible on few occasions but both of those times he had been no where near as bad as to do something like this. He didn’t even fit the bill; had been a happy family man with a wife and three kids, a prosperous job, a company car and a huge house in the suburbs. No reason to kill himself. No reason to do this.

She stood unnoticed, as always, staring out in horror at the carnage around her. No one could see the disbelief on her face, the disgust and the distaste; the inability to comprehend how anyone could create such a horrendous catastrophe. The whole east wing of the psychiatric ward was in tatters, a blown out and blackened skeleton of what it once was. The floor hot and sticky as the hungry flames weakened the plastic tiles and the smell of burning chemicals in the air. People fighting their way in to save the lives of any survivors, such lucky souls running if they were able and shouting if not. The suicide of Jason Marks meant that with him he had taken hundreds others. His suicide meant that he had gone straight to hell.

There had to be demonic involvement in this, she was sure; though it had to be a higher input than usual because the air was rife with the scent of sulphur. Only other immortals or those blessed with the vision to see what they shouldn’t could detect such a disturbance in the air, though sometimes the aroma was so thickened that clueless mortals suffered it to. She wanted to help, wanted to save whom she could but the rules prevented her from doing so. No direct contact with humans, none at all. Only a light touch, a whisper. Such a light touch was hard to adhere to however when she was certain that the other side had seriously violated the rules. Someone had to have actively driven Jason into doing this, had to have practically forced him into ending the lives of so many defenceless, sick people; many of whom in here weren’t crazy at all. They could just see too much, far too much.

The bowls of hell opened to welcome its latest victims, her search continuing for the culprit of this anarchy. For years now the balance had been tipping, the understanding breaking. As news crews, police cars, ambulances and fire engines squealed outside; swiftly, very swiftly, the lay of the laws were crumbling. If the demons wanted to play it like this, then so could they.

Dave Williams had things. Things that were breathtakingly beautiful, and things so horrendous that they would give Wes Craven nightmares. He didn't know what they were, and he tried to ignore them, but they just wouldn't go away. The doctors he was seeing said he had some sort of acute hallucinations, or something along those lines. Dave never did know much about medical talk, being a simple mechanic. They had given him pills, but they didn't work too good, just made him sleepy most of the time.

Finally, he decided that a vacation was what he needed. He decided he would go to London. He liked London. His doctors thought it would be a good idea, and even told him a place he could go to get his meds refilled, or if he needed to talk to someone. That's where he was headed now. But by the looks of the place he was pretty far down on the list of people who needed help. It looked like a whole wing of the hospital had exploded. He shook his head at the whole thing. He was about to walk away when he saw her. A beautiful girl with wings, what most people would probably call an angel. He just stared at her, dumbfounded. Apparently London wasn't far enough away to get away from these things he had been seeing.

Lucca Benicio was pleased. Very pleased. It had all been too easy, even for him. A hint here, a nudge there, and his victim had committed one of the biggest acts of hatred that he'd seen in a very long time. Yes, he was pleased with himself. Admiring his handiwork, Lucca inspected the destruction from all angles, keeping himself unseen for once. People were bound to ask questions if they saw an overjoyed, smug man watching the scene unfold. No, he wanted to savour his success in peace. His feet, donned in expensive Italian shoes, passed over the ash and burned out wreckage, leaving no footprint behind, as he surveyed the perimeter smugly. This really was one of his best efforts yet. The other demons in Hell would be falling at his feet, worshipping him, for what he'd achieved. It was beyond the scope of any other in recent history, he was pretty sure. Turning away from the destruction for the first time, someone caught Lucca's eye just as the human saw her. Grace. He knew her well. He also knew that she'd been trying to prevent his victim from doing something like this. But she obviously wasn't good enough, because he'd won. And he was never one to pass up the chance of gloating. Approaching her silently from behind, Lucca drew level with her and came to a standstill, observing the destroyed hospital just as she did. "One of my best results yet, don't you think?" he commented, his tone lazy and arrogant. Yes, he was very very pleased.

She span around as the gloating voice came to her ears. Lucca. She’d known it was him, she’d been sure of it. Of course! Who else but the one person who seemed to take joy in not only making people suffer but also in breaking every rule ever created? She knew that his superiors wouldn’t mind, no, of course they wouldn’t. They wouldn’t care because they were just as eager to see some death and destruction as he was. She didn’t see the man in the crowd that had singled them out from the carnage, ruffled her wings in frustration and scowled at the smug smirk he was sending her. Yes, they knew one another well. Sometimes she honestly wished that they didn’t. “I don’t know,” she remarked firmly, “Three quarters of the place is still standing. Do you intend to find someone to blow those up now, or a little later-?” She couldn’t believe she had done this! She hated it when he gloated yet at the same time was waiting for him to, was waiting for him to reveal what sly tricks he had pulled this time to get a perfectly decent man to do something so wretched. He must have been playing poor Jason like a puppet. “Don’t you think its sore sportsmanship to parade around in the wake of your own carnage-?” Yes, she was an angel. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t be bitter.

------------

He really didn’t want to get up. Not that he had much choice in the matter with his blaring alarm screaming in his ear of course, though after bashing it with the flat of his hand several times the damn thing managed to fall to silence. He just wanted to snuggle back down into the duvet and never go to work again. But he couldn’t. He had to pay the rent, had to be able to buy food. Problem was he spent so much time earning money that he didn’t have any time to do or support the thing he really loved. His dream of becoming a successful photographer was swiftly going down the plug hole. Reluctantly and rather miraculously Samuel managed to find the gall to brave the cold and slide out of bed, his place of rest being a mattress on the floor while his funds went to slightly more important things. That said he couldn’t really afford the heating that month either, and as he wearily dragged himself to his feet he wished he wasn’t still after all these years just living the life of a student. Because that was what his tip of a place looked like. It looked like some pit for a teenage boy with photographs and various equipment strewn here and there from the aftermath of late working nights; a screen separating the bed from a couch and a TV with a slightly more organised living room, a few counters for the open-plan kitchen with a small table and then an en-suite bathroom off to one side by a cluttered book case. He couldn’t of course afford to rent a studio and god knew he wasn’t particularly engaged by fashion photography anyway despite the fact it was where most of the money was. He wanted to be a photo-journalist, wanted to use it as an excuse to travel. London however was like a steel cage dragging him back in whenever he tried to leave.

Rubbing his eyes and running a hand through his hair he looked around for some clothes, bent down to fish for his jeans. At least he wasn’t expected to wear a fully fledged suit today in the office, could get away with this and a shirt- if he could find a clean one, for that matter. The best one he located was shrugged onto his shoulders before he then made his way through into the kitchen. Breakfast was first on his list of priorities, and as always the TV was switched on while he foraged for food. The news flashed up something that seemed to be a fire at a local hospital.

Dave watched as a man in a fancy suit appraoched the angel like woman and began to speak to her. He looked like a regular person, but he had to be more. Dave then remembered that some of the things he had been seeing had appeared to be human one minute and then something else the next. He swiftly turned around and began to walk away, mumbling "They're not real. They're not real. They're not real." At least that's what the doctors had told him. That they were a figment of his imagination. Probably from some traumatic event from when he was a child. "But if that's what they are," he asked himself, "then why isn't the medication working?" He shook his head. Several people stared and him, probably wondering why he was talking to himself. He turned around for one more look. Yep, they were still there, talking amongst the carnage. His eye twiched a bit, a nervous habit he had formed, and he sat down on a bench, still staring at the figures. "They can't be real...can they?" he asked himself under his breath.

"No-" Lucca answered smugly. Bad sportsmanship? There was no such thing in his book. When he achieved something he was particularly proud of, why would he want to skulk in hiding? "Why would it be?" he voiced his own thoughts. "I want to see this, I want to see what a genius I am." He turned his head to look at the beautiful angel beside him, and an expression of superiority appeared on his shadowed features. "Not that I need confirmation, of course." It was one thing he never needed, although he wouldn't complain if others showered him with praise. His ego could never be too big. Standing a little straighter and adjusting the sleeves of his ludicrously expensive suit, he looked back towards the ruined hospital with a small, amused smile. That was another thing he loved about Humans: how they accepted his worthless money that would vanish in their pockets in no time at all. He bought what he liked, knowing that they were too gullible to question his good looks and superior air. They were duped into thinking he was someone important and to be trusted. Well, they were right about the first, in his mind anyway. He was silent for a few moments, but her previous comment hadn't gone unnoticed. "And if you think I'm going to reveal my plans to you that easily, you're stupider than I thought. You have to work for your clues."

"I've never been interested in your plans, Lucca. Mostly they're just pathetic whims fleshed out with big budgets and you as the star," Grace snapped back, knowing that she should probably at least try to send this demon back to Hell for his horrible crimes. Unfortunately however Lucca was too well connected for her to do that, especially on her own, and as he wasn't actually currently visible in the mortal plane there was nothing she could do about it. Except maybe file a complaint to her superiors and then wait the several years it would take for them to actually come down here and do something. "Besides, it doesn't take a genius to figure out you had more play in this than's allowed. What did you do this time? Drag him into the ward? Sell him the explosives yourself-?!" Proof! She needed proof. She wasn't going to be getting it however, not here, not now; and as there was painfully nothing she could do about the damage or wounded either she turned her blue eyes stubbornly away from the wreckage. At least here the fumes weren't so strong.

Lucca sent her a withering glare, and raised and amused eyebrow. "You expect me to give you tips?!" Unaware of the human watching them, he folded his arms across his broad chest. The sleeve of his jacket pulled back slightly, revealing a new watch that he'd bought only the other day. It was important to keep his image up, remind all the other Immortals how rich and powerful he was. He might not have been particularly high up, but that was only because he didn't want to be. Responsibility was not something he desired. He could manipulate people to do what he wished without the aid of authority. "Like I said, you're going to have to do this on your own, Grace." He allowed himself a quick glimpse of the wings that were currently trembling with anger on her back. It was the only reason that he would ever envy angels. He had no interest in their good intentions, demons had more fun- but he envied Grace's ability to fly. Not that she'd ever find out, of course. "Even though it is getting a bit too easy. At least a hint of a challenge would be nice."

How did he always manage to surpass his own level of annoyance? He was impossible! Clenching her fists as her angry accusations seemed to get her nowhere she squared her shoulders and sent him a furious glare. Words seemed to have failed her. All those people! How could he! "Ugh! You're so- ugh!" Pushing her hands out into his shoulders she shoved him angrily, knew it was hardly much of a push when she had the strength of God behind her. If she wanted to hurt him, she really would be able to hurt him, but right at that moment she just wanted to get as far away from his disgusting smugness as possible. Taking the opportunity to end their conversation there as he stepped back slightly Grace whipped around to stride off and away from the scene. It was easy to walk past the armed police, flashing sirens and panicked citizens when no one could see her; the growing light of dawn giving the gathered news crews an even clearer image of the damage left now the flames were being extinguished. Lucca had planned this out down to the every detail, it seemed. "Like I'd want tips from you-" she muttered furiously, her feathers still trembling with rage, her wings giving one irritated flap as she glared at the concrete. Her kind never wore shoes for lightness of foot. A complete opposite to what demons seemed to like to adorn themselves in.

Dave watched as the angel woman passed right by the police and news crews. His head turned as she passed right by him. She didn't look happy. He turned his head back to look at the man in the expensive suit. He almost seemed to be admiring the ruins of the hospital wing. Dave held his head in his hands. Why did he keep seeing these things. They seemed so real. But no one else could see them, so the only logical conclusion was that he was crazy. "Why don't they just go away!" he said aloud, drawing several nervous glances from nearby pedestrians. He looked around at the people staring at him. "What? Never seen a man lose his mind before?" and with that he got up off the bench he had been occupying and stalked off, unsure of his destination.

Watching Grace walk away from him, Lucca knew that he'd won yet another victory, if only a small one. Everything was a competition for him, or at least was an opportunity to demonstrate his superiority over weak, worthless angels. Aware that he'd greatly angered her, he wasn't about to let this go. With a satisfied smirk, he set off after her, still oblivious of the human eyes following their every move. "And why not?" he questioned arrogantly, once more falling into step beside her. It was hardly difficult, as his strides were long due to his height. They might have been friends once, but now the only bond that he and Grace shared was a dedication to outdo one another. Or at least that's how he saw it. "With my help you might actually get somewhere in that little organisation of yours," he commented, knowing exactly how she would feel having him describe her kind as a business or a company. "I'm pretty sure you're not content being at the bottom of the pile for all eternity." Once more his eyes darted to her wings, waiting for that flutter that would tell him he was getting to her.

"Whereas on the other hand, you apparently are-" She retorted with a false smile, a fake flutter of her eyes and then a warning glare. She had turned to him slightly again but seemed to think better of it and continued to walk. One thing that did appease her in all of this however was that if she wanted to she could just jump up and fly away. She knew how much Lucca loathed not getting the final word, also knew that despite all of his bravado and outward assurances he was in fact just a lower level demon who just so happened to have slightly more gall and slightly more power than others. "Then again I don't blame you. I'm sure that you're perfectly content with not having to do anything of any real importance for the rest of your life. No, petty cons and selling drugs to twelve-year-olds is exactly what you'd prefer to do," she added, sticking her head up and letting as much scorn seep into her voice as possible. She had glanced back over her shoulder when someone had shouted but thought nothing of it. There were people dying here, after all. Of course people were going to yell in desperation.

Lucca's calm, cool exterior finally seemed to tremble as his inward anger threatened to surface. It was barely a moment before he returned to his usual arrogance, but the change was there if Grace had been looking for it. "Well, at least I'm capable of doing more," he answered, deciding not to point out that the mayhem behind them was all his doing. He'd get plenty of praise and attention once he returned to his own plane of existance. However, he seemed to pause in his footsteps for a second, and glance behind him. Yes, he'd succeeded in making someone blow up a hospital when no one had said that he could. He could do anything. And he wanted Grace to admit that. It annoyed him that she refused to acknowledge his brilliance, and he'd devised a way of making her admit it. "Although if you're so certain, maybe you'll be willing to make a little wager," he said lazily, inspecting his silver cufflinks to make sure that they were just as shiny as before. She continued to walk, and he wanted all her attention. Moving with the speed of his kind, he stepped in front of her, blocking her path. His dark eyes looked down at her as he stood tall, making sure to assert his superior height, all three inches of it. "I bet you that I can bring down anyone you choose. Pick anyone you like. The Queen of England, if you want. I bet you I can do it." Looking back over her shoulder towards his masterpiece as a hysterical woman screamed for her husband and had to be held back by firemen, he smirked. "Unless, of course, you don't want to risk it."

She rolled her eyes. This was typical of Lucca, absolutely typical. A decade didn't pass without him managing to talk her into at least one bet, though his choices these days were getting all the more extreme. They used to just see who could get someone to do the kindest or the most selfish thing during twenty-four hours. But now he'd see each one through to the end. "If you really think I'm going to help you through your lack of imagination then you've got another thing coming. Pick your own victims, Lucca. If I'm going to make a bet with anyone of your kind it may as well be a bet with the Devil. Not with one of his stooges." She sent him a pointed smile and turned to push around him again. Grace didn't want him to catch her this time again however, leapt nimbly into the air to spread her wings and take off into the sky. A few more beats and she was gone, disappearing off around the corner of the closet building to climb higher and soar above the rooftops. She needed advice, needed help. And there was only one place to go and get it.

Damn. He hadn't had the last word. Lucca was disappointed to see the angel fly away without accepting his challenge, but he knew she'd come back to him. She always did, even when they were alive. Sooner or later, she'd take his bet, and he would win. He was already relishing the thought of it. Still, now that the target of his taunting was gone, and he's watched the burning hospital for long enough, he was getting bored. Glancing around him, he watched a man walk away from the scene, one who he was pretty sure he'd seen talking to himself not too long ago. Obviously an escapee. Lucca deliberated, watching him for a few moments, but he didn't seem like a good enough target to intrest him. He could get up to much more fun things in Hell, where there would be plenty of female demons desperate for his attention once they heard about what he'd achieved. He could always come back and look for him later. Still smirking to himself with a smug satisfaction, he turned around and stalked back in the direction of the hospital. He'd barely taken a few steps however before his whole form started to shimmer, and then with a sudden roar of flames he vanished, leaving behind nothing but a puff of smoke and a hint of poisonous fumes.
